The Woodland Retreat is set in a deciduous wood of mainly Oak, Beech, Birch, Willow, Rowan and Hazel trees. The ground is carpeted with Wood Sorrel and there is an abundance of ferns and many varieties of Moss. Primroses and Foxgloves flower in the open spaces and Honeysuckle climbs the trees in mid summer, sending out the most amazing perfume in the evening sun.
Bees and butterflies are a constant in these surroundings- look out for the Speckled wood, Holly Blue, Purple Hair Streak and the more common Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to catch site of the Deer in the early hours as they run along the woodland pathway into the open fields. The pond is also a great haven for wildlife too, especially for the Hawker and Golden-ringed Dragonfly.
Many birds frequent the woods, so keep an ear out for the Willow Warbler and Chiff-chaffs or catch a glimpse of the Green Woodpecker or the Greater Spotted Woodpecker. As the sun goes down, hear the distinctive call of the Tawny Owl, the "hoot" of the male or the more sharp sounding "kewick" of the female. When night-time falls, watch the swooping Pipistrelle bats as they dart to and fro overhead.
